Fall in Door County
There’s nothing more beautiful than fall in Door County! Of course we love every season up here, there’s just something special about the crisp air, waves crashing on the shores of Lake Michigan, and the stunning fall foliage. It’s no wonder Forbes recognized Door County as one of the “Best Fall Foliage Destinations in the US”… and we of course loved their mention of our property, Egg Harbor Haven!
If you find yourself lucky enough to be embarking on a trip to the peninsula this time of year, you may be asking what there is to do, or if your favorite summer spots are open…but don’t worry - we’ve put together the ultimate Door County fall checklist for you!
Here are some favorite things to do and see, but just warning - you’re going to need more than just a day trip to accomplish it all. So make sure you book your stay at one of our amazing properties, like the Fish Creek Beach House, Egg Harbor Haven, or Historic Hill Street Home.
Cana Island Lighthouse
Discover Door County’s most iconic lighthouse - built in 1869, this 89-foot-tall tower was the original home of the lighthouse keeper and his family. Ride in a haywagon over the causeway to explore the island and climb the 97 steps of the tower’s spiral staircase to reach the gallery deck. The outside deck delivers a sweeping view of Lake Michigan and the Door County peninsula.
Highway 42 Curvy Roads
You’ve likely seen the photos of the winding roads lined with beautiful trees in northern Door County. There’s really no better time than the fall to take the drive for yourself! Highway 42, between Timberline Road and Ports des Morts Drive, is known for its 15 serpentine curves as it nears the Washington Island Ferry dock. This highway segment is a favorite of recreational drivers and photographers in all seasons.
“Sip” on Something Special
This adorable eatery, Sip, is right off the highway as you enter Sister Bay. Open all day for food and drinks, and into the evening as a wine bar, this spot truly has something for everyone. Experience the eclectic atmosphere and enjoy a seasonal beverage of your choice…then continue north for some shopping!
Apple Picking
Pick your own apples and shop a variety of seasonal offerings at Lautenbach’s Orchard! Cherrys might be the unofficial fruit of Door County, but local apples are just as delicious. This charming farm store is located just off the highway as you head into downtown Fish Creek….you can’t miss it!
Eagle Tower
There’s truly no better place to experience the fall foliage than from the top of Eagle Tower! Explore all of Peninsula State Park (hike, bike, walk, or drive through the winding roads and trails), but make sure you save time (and energy) to make it to the top and enjoy the views. Fun fact: the park also has its own golf course…call ahead for a tee time and continue to enjoy the views from each hole!
Stone’s Throw
What pairs well with a visit to Door County? Anything from Stone’s Throw Winery! Sample a selection of wines from their tasting room, or grab a bottle (and snack) from their restaurant, Vino! Vino!.
Haunted Pub Crawl
Enjoy the “intoxicating” tales of the peninsula’s haunted pubs and taverns with Door County Trolley Tours visiting three different local bars…costumes are highly encouraged! There’s also a “family friendly” option for a traditional ghost tour where you can learn about the “haunting” past of Door County!
Chili + Cheese Curds
Some things are just classic for a reason…and it’s not fall in Wisconsin without chili, cheese curds, and your drink of choice (may I suggest a bloody mary or old fashioned…depending on the time of day). You’ll find all these things at Bayside, a true Door County landmark where locals, tourists, and everyone in between come to gather all day and night!
Shop Local
Who doesn’t want to update their fall wardrobe? Another great thing about visiting an area like Door County is supporting our small businesses! There are new shops and boutiques opening up every year, each with their own flair! Some of our favorites include…Wish, Spruce, Fred & Co, Sister Golden, and Ginger House.
And don’t forget - Door County also features a variety of popular fall festivals, like Egg Harbor’s Pumpkin Patch and Sister Bay’s Fall Fest! Reservations for these dates book up quickly, so reach out NOW for your 2025 stay!
